Sax is located in the Vinalopo Valley, in south-east Spain and is dominated by its stunning castle. Sax is easily accessed off the main A31 Alicante to Albacete motorway and is located between the towns of Elda and Villena The population at the last count was approximately 12,000 inhabitants. The history of Sax can be traced back to the times of the Moorish occupation beginning during the Eighth Century yet unfortunately, little is known of the town prior to this time. In 1476 Sax became part of the Marquisate of Villena, within the province of Murcia, however, in 1836 Sax finally became part of the province of Alicante in which it remains to this day. Sax remains primarily an agricultural town, the main crops being grapes (for wine production), olives, cereals, fruit and vegetables. However, towards the latter partof the 20th Century, Sax developed some light industry including the production of shoes, leather goods and furniture. The Castle of Sax which dominates the town by day and illuminates the town by night was originally built on the limestone ridge during the Tenth Century and the Levante tower from the Twelth Century still survives today. However, as with many churches and castles throughout the world work continued long after they were intially built and the keep and courtyards of the Castle of Sax were built at a later dae. It is possible to walk around the castle and grounds either individually or as part of a guided tour. Parish Church of our Lady of the Assumption, this lovely church was originally built between 1530 and 1550 and further extended in 1789. This church really is very well preserved and most definitely worth a visit. Museo Archaelogico outlines the history of the area including "El Pocico de la Nieve" (a snow cave), this pit was created in order that snow could be stored and then to supply water during the summer months. For the energetic, the towering rock which looms over Sax is a popular place for rock climbing, the most notable ascent being the "Penas del Rey" (Suffer of the King). For those wishing to participate in something a little more relaxing, the tiny hamlet of Salinas lies close to Sax and from here you can visit the Sierra de Salinas Nature Reserve containing its own salt lake with a number of protected species of flora and fauna. A modern day town, Sax has undergone a lot of rejuvenation in the past 15 years or so and now with its shops, bars, restaurants, schools, medical centre and large weekly market held on a Monday it really is a place worthy of notice when looking for a new home. With the close proximity to Alicante only 30 minutes away you really do have everything you need on your doorstep. |
