Pinoso, or Los Pinos as it is more locally known, nestles amoungst beautiful moutainous countryside. It is situated on the edge of the Murcia/Alicante border and is approximately 450 metres above sea level. With a population of little over 8,000 inhabitants, it has a municipal area of 126 square kilometres. The history of Pinoso can be tracked back to the times of the Iberians, however the area was later settled by the Romans and of course the Moors during the Arab occupation of Spain. In 1743 the popular church of Pinoso was erected in honour of the Apostle Saint Peter. Pinoso was joined with the local town of Monovar until it gained its independence in 1826. Pinoso is a prosperous town with all modern amenities including shops, bars, restuarants, supermarket, post office, schools, sports centre and an enormous bodega. The Bodega of Pinoso has a storage capacity of 14,000,000 litres of wine and the white limey soil in the area is home of the vineyards growing the Monastrell grape. Rose, white and dessert wines are produced in abundance in the area and form part of the "denominacion de origin" wine area of Alicante. The main Fiesta of Pinoso is celebrated in the first week in August when everybody from the whole town, and surrounding areas, join in to enjoy the "real Spanish life", relaxation, celebration and enjoyment!! There is also the "Dia del Villazoo" fair which is held in February and this is to commemorate the independence of Pinoso as a municipality. To enjoy the stunning Pinoso countryside, the local authority has created a wonderful picnic area set amongst a forest of pine trees complete with seating, tables, BBQ's and running water. It is here that many people gather just to relax and take in the setting and spend quality time with family and friends. If there are days when all you want to do is relax, then you need only travel a short distance to the Spa Town of Fortuna where you can enjoy steam rooms, water therapy, hot springs and massage facilities. However, on the days you want the hustle and bustle of modern day living then Alicante with its shopping, beaches, port and international airport are only half an hour away. Pinoso really is a town to be explored and enjoyed, a traditional Spanish town that is steeped in history and that celebrates Fiestas in a spectacular way. |
